The Murray State Women's Golf team is set to play in the 2104 NCAA East Regional Golf Tournament when they compete at the Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Florida.
Head Coach Velvet Milkman and her squad will have a practice round on Wednesday (May 7) at 12:52 p.m. and then will compete in three rounds, each consisting of 18 holes, Thursday through Saturday (May 8-10).
The trip to Tallahassee marks the third time the Racer program has advanced to NCAA competition since its first appearance in 2009 when the Racers traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State. In 2010, they played the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana.
The Racer Journey
Many are aware of Coach Milkman's "streak". After 21 years, coach has never had a student-athlete leave without a championship ring. To a leader whose main mantra is "A ring on one hand and a diploma in the other", the streak is an important component of the program's success. To add to the drama of the event, that streak was in jeopardy of coming to an end with the lone senior, and one of the program's most successful players having yet to earn her championship.
The OVC Tournament was nothing less than exciting as senior Delaney Howson led the field of 50 competitors for the length of the competition to finish with a 13-stroke lead. However, with a relatively young group of competitors, the Racers battled it out in a close contest with Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky. It came down to Howson's birdie on the difficult 18th hole of the Fighting Joe course at the Shoals in Alabama to clinch the Murray State win.
The Secret Weapon – Underclassmen
Making up the MSU starting five, freshmen: Jacklyn Van Meter and Sydney Trimble, sophomores: Abbi Stamper and Sophie Hillier and lone senior Delaney Howson.
Though they are a young group, the Racers are full of talent. Freshman Sydney Trimble earned herself a spot on the 2014 OVC Newcomer team as well as a spot on the all-tournament after taking the fifth place spot at the OVC Tournament with a score of 229. Her average of 77.6 puts her in the Top-10 of the OVC. Her classmate Jacklyn Van Meter has also been successful with an average of 78.45 and has the team's second lowest round score of 69.
Representing the sophomore class, Abbi Stamper (79.7) and Sophie Hillier (79.8) have not only improved as golfers this year but also matured into leaders to make them the "most improved" duo of the team. Stamper especially stepped up at the OVC Tournament with a score of 233 for an 11th place finish.
The Howson Effect
As her senior year comes to a close, Delaney Howson can rest assured that she will not only be remembered but will surely be missed. Any coach's dream, a driven scholar, an aggressive competitor and most importantly a good-hearted person, Howson will leave behind her a legacy that will live on through Racer golf history long after her journey to Tallahassee is over.
After taking the OVC field by storm, Howson commanded a 13-stroke lead to finish 4-under par with a score of 212, these along with her second round score of 68 are all new OVC Tournament records. The stupendous performance earned her the 2014 Player of the Year award. Her average of 73.0 tops the OVC and puts her in the Top-75 in the country and the Top-175 in the world. The four-time All-OVC selection has earned her the distinction only four other conference players have earned and the first Racer ever. Howson set the MSU record for lowest score in program history with a 6-under 66 versus Austin Peay in the fall and has a total of 7 career wins thus far.
Howson also excels accademicaly with a 4.0 in finance and four OVC Medals of Honor. In 2012-13, Howson was honored with the coveted OVC Scholar Athlete award. In 2013-14, Howson was presented with the Murray State female Athlete of the Year award and the Margaret Simmons Female Athlete of the Year at MSU.
