Howson Named 2014 Margaret Simmons Award Winner

The Murray State Women's Center honored senior golf student-athlete Delaney Howson with the Margaret Simmons Female Student Athlete of the Year award.
Howson will soon graduate as one of the best golfers in Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference history because of her performance on the course and in the classroom. She is on her way to becoming a four-time All-Ohio Valley Conference pick. With a stroke average of 73.3, Howson leads the OVC and is a candidate to be the OVC Player of the Year for a second time. She had the lowest round in the Murray State history (Oct. 15) when she shot a 6-under-par 66 at the APSU Intercollegiate in Clarksville, Tenn. She was also named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2010.
If Howson is selected All-OVC again this year, she will be the first Murray State women's golfer to be named all-conference all four years.
Howson has helped the Racers win two tournaments this season and has won three individual titles. During her career, she has been a part of nine regular season tournament titles, has won five individual titles and has earned an impressive 18 top-five finishes.
Howson is just as impressive with her school work graduating in May with a finance degree. She won the coveted OVC Scholar Athlete Award for 2012-13 and has been awarded the OVC Medal of Honor three times. Additionally, she is a three-time Women's Golf Coaches Association All Scholar Team selection. As the team captain, Howson transfers her leadership abilities to her service work with the MSU Student Athlete Advisory Council where she is involved in many community service projects.
"Delaney has been very determined to succeed in her sport and in the classroom through-out her time at Murray State University," said Head Coach Velvet Milkman. "She has a very strong work ethic and has put in the effort to be successful during her college career. Delaney understands the commitment it takes to continue to grow and develop and is willing to do the things necessary to make herself a better student-athlete and person."
Other Racers nominated for the Simmons Award were Katlyn Hudson (Volleyball) and Leslie Bridges (Softball).
The Simmons Award is given to the Murray State female student-athlete that best demonstrates the characteristics of influencing and inspiring other student-athletes and representing Murray State in a first-class manner. Margaret Simmons started the MSU women's track & field program in 1968 and during her 23-year tenure as head coach, she led the Racers to eight OVC titles and was named OVC Coach of the Year six times. Simmons was a pioneer at Murray State and was inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 1994. She lives in Murray, Ky.
Howson and the Racers will be back in action this weekend. The Racers will face OVC competitors Belmont and Austin Peay at the Highlands Golf Course in Huntsville, Ala., Saturday. In a dual match Sunday, Murray State will take on Southern Illinois at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Each event is an 18-hole event.
