2014 All-OVC Baseball Teams
Junior Brock Downey was selected as the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year in a vote by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. The all-conference teams were announced Tuesday evening at the pre-tournament banquet in Jackson, Tennessee.
Downey was joined on the All-OVC First Team by second baseman Anthony Bayus, while Tyler Lawrence was selected to the All-Freshman Team
Downey (Murray, Kentucky) was honored after completing one of the biggest turnarounds on the mound. He moved into the weekend rotation this season and quickly emerged as the ace of the staff. He finished the season by going 9-3 with a 2.76 ERA. He struck out 74 and walked 25 in a school-record 107.2 innings. He became the 10th pitcher in Breds history to win at least nine games in a season, and the first since Daniel Calhoun (11) and Chris Craycraft (10) in 2009.
Downey went at least six innings in 12 of his 13 starts, including throwing a career-best 9.1 innings against Eastern Illinois. After not allowing a run in back-to-back starts against North Dakota State and Morehead State, Downey allowed just one earned run and struck out 12 in a complete-game victory over UT Martin. He closed out the season by striking out eight in a complete-game victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Bayus (Louisville, Kentucky) led the Breds offense by hitting .327 with 15 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 31 RBIs. He was tied for the team lead with 65 hits, while ranking second with 37 runs scored. His numbers were even more impressive in OVC contests, as he hit .364 with 11 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 19 RBIs in 30 games.
He closed out the season by hitting safely in eight of the last 10 games, including five multi-hit games. He began the hot stretch by homering in back-to-back games at Southeast Missouri, and went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run in a victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Lawrence (Collierville, Tennessee) was one of just three players to start every game during the season. He made 29 starts at catcher and 23 at designated hitter. In his first campaign, he hit .313 with 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 36 RBIs. He led the team in RBIs, while tieing for the team lead with 65 hits. He collected 21 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games. He drove in four runs in a victory over Bowling Green, then bested that effort with a five-RBI game against UT Martin. Â
He raised his averaged 17 points over the final nine games of the season, going 14-for-35, with a double, triple, home run and seven RBIs. He also scored five runs.Â
