2014 OVC Softball Postseason Awards
Four Murray State softball players were honored when the Ohio Valley Conference released its 2014 postseason awards on Tuesday morning. Mo Ramsey led the way for the Racers by being named first-team All-OVC, while Shelbey Miller was a second-team selection. Two freshmen were also honored, as Jessica Twaddle and Mason Robinson were named to the All-Newcomer team.
This is the first All-OVC honor for both Ramsey and Miller, after each was named to the All-Newcomer team in their respective freshman seasons. The duo represents the ninth and 10th All-OVC selections in program history, while Ramsey is now just the fourth Racer to earn first-team honors. The four players receiving honors from the OVC ties a program best set in 2012.
Ramsey, a junior outfielder from Pinckneyville, Illinois, has had a breakout season for the Racers, by leading the team with a career-high .337 powered by a team-high 60 hits. She is now tied with Megan Glosser's 2011 campaign for second most hits in a single season. In addition, Ramsey has two doubles, a triple, 13 RBIs, 13 walks and is a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts on the year.
Miller, a sophomore second baseman from Goreville, Illinois, followed Ramsey at .323 this season, which means she has hit over .300 in each of her two collegiate seasons. Earlier this year, she became the fastest player in program history to reach 100 hits, doing so in 95 games and besting Megan Glosser's previous best of 99. While Miller matched her 12 doubles and two triples from last season in 2014, she also added the long ball to her arsenal by going yard four times.
Twaddle has helped lead a highly-successful freshman class for MSU this year and joins Ramsey Miller in hitting .300-plus at .308. The native of Franklin, Tennessee, has scored 20 runs, had six doubles, two triples and three home runs in her first season in Murray. She began her career by earning all-tournament honors in her first collegiate weekend and has been the definition of a utility player for MSU by spending time in the outfield, at second base, at third base and in the designated player slot.
Robinson, a freshman from Lewis Center, Ohio, is another key component of head coach Kara Amundson's first recruiting class and posted a team-low ERA of 2.68. At 11-8 on the season, she has set a new MSU record for wins by a freshman, surpassing teammate CheyAnne Gaskey's previous mark of nine. She is only four strikeouts from becoming just the third MSU pitcher to record 100 strikeouts in a season, at 96, and also has a team low opponent's batting average of .248, the third lowest in program history amongst regular starters.
Murray State will begin its quest for the first NCAA tournament berth in program history Wednesday at the 2014 OVC Softball Championship in Jacksonville, Alabama. Up first for the fourth-seeded Racers will be a face-off with the fifth seed Eastern Kentucky. First pitch at University Field is scheduled from 3p.m., and live stat and live video links for all games can be found at GoRacers.com.
