Zakutney Leads Racers At 95th Kentucky Open

A large group of current and former Murray State golfers began play Tuesday at the 95th Kentucky Open Men's Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect, Ky. The event is a 54-hole tournament that features amateurs and professionals.
Four current Racers are in the field including Matthew Zakutney who had a spot in fifth place in the field of 155 players with a 2-under-par 70. A sophomore in the fall, Zakutney started at the 10th hole and made eagle at the par-5 11th. He went out with a 2-under-par 34 and came home with an even par 36.
Former Racers playing as professionals got off to a good start at Hunting Creek.
Jared Wolfe fired a 3-under-par 69 and was in second place, two shots off the lead. Patrick Newcomb had a share of fifth place with a 70.
Among other current MSU players, Duncan McCormick had a spot in 40th place with a 4-over-par 76, while Brock Simmons carded a 79 and was in 83rd place. T.J. Ferry had an 87 and was in 146th place.
Former Racer Josh Rhodes is playing as an amateur and was in 24th place with a 74 with former Racer and professional Nick Newcomb.
Other former MSU players in the Kentucky Open as professionals includes: Mitchell Moore and Hunter Ford each with a 78 and a spot in 70th place. Michael Craft and Cameron Carrico were in 83rd place with 79.
Former Murray State baseball player Britt Stevenson fired an 85 in round one and had a spot in 137th place.
The round one leader was Cooper Musselman with a 5-under-par 67. Defending champion Rick Cochran was in fifth place with a 70.
The Kentucky Open has round two slated for Wednesday when the cut will be made with the top 72 players advancing into Thursday's final round.
The course at Hunting Creek is playing 7,157 yards and par-72.
The past six champions are in the field for the Kentucky Open this week. Murray State Golf has produced two champions of the event since its start in 1920. Chris Wilson won as an amateur in 1996 and Ron Acree, who was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 1887, won the championship in 1967 as a professional.
