Zakutney Leads Racer Golf At Kentucky Open

Murray State Golf had a good showing at the 95th Kentucky Open Men's Championship at Hunting Creek Country Club in Prospect, Kentucky.
One of the Commonwealth's top golf championships, the Kentucky Open was first played in 1920 and matches amateurs and professionals in the same event.
The Racers had four current student-athletes and eight former players playing as professionals in the original field of 155.
Sophomore Matthew Zakutney made the cut and placed 23rd place with rounds of 70-74-79=223. He placed ninth among the amateurs that were in the field.
Jared Wolfe was the top finisher among those former Racers in the event with a second place finish after rounds of 69-71-68=208.
Other former Racers playing as pros included: Hunter Ford in ninth place with scores of 78-69-71=218 and Cameron Carrico in 16th place with scores of 79-69-72=220. Nick Newcomb was a 32nd place finisher after rounds of 74-75-77=226, with brother Patrick Newcomb had a 58th place showing with scores of 70-81-79=230. Mitchell Moore also placed 58th with rounds of 78-73-79=230. Josh Rhodes is an amateur and placed 65th with scores of 74-78-82=234.
Current MSU players Duncan McCormick, Brock Simmons and T.J. Ferry also played in the event and missed the cut. Former Racer Michael Craft, a professional, also missed the cut. Ferry withdrew after the first round.
Rick Cochran was the champion of the Kentucky Open for a second straight time. He had scores of 70-67-67=204 which was good for a four-shot win over Jared Wolfe.
Murray State has recorded two champions over the years. The first was  Ron Acree, who was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 1887, and won the championship in 1967 as a professional. Chris Wilson won the Kentucky Open as an amateur in 1996.
The Kentucky Open is a 54-hole tournament that features amateurs and professionals.
The course at Hunting Creek played 7,157 yards and to a par of 72.
