Former graduate assistant Sam Kranz has been added to the Murray State track & field and cross country staff as a second full-time assistant coach, head coach Jenny Severns announced on Thursday.
"We are really excited to add Sam to our staff full time," said Severns. "He was with us as a graduate assistant last season and has proven that he has the knowledge of the sport necessary to continue to build our program. He is motivated to learn everything and anything he can to make the team better and has established great relationships with the team and staff." Â
In addition, Kranz' hiring represents a step forward for the Racer track & field program by bringing the number of full-time staff members to three.
"We are very grateful to Mr. Ward for seeing that the growth in the program requires growth in the staff. Â We have worked really hard to grow the team and having another full time coach will allow us to give each student-athlete the attention that they need to become the best that they can be."
In his new role, Kranz will continue to work with pole vaulters, high, long and triple jumpers and multi-event athletes. Last season at the OVC Championships, he helped coach Kiara Austin to a personal best in the triple jump at 12.15m, which was good for a sixth place finish. Kranz also played a role in recruiting 23 student-athletes to the track & field team, the largest under Severns.
Prior to arriving in Murray, Kranz was a volunteer assistant, working with pole vault, and multi-event athletes at Northern Iowa during the 2012 season. While at UNI, Kranz assisted in the development of several high caliber athletes. Notable athletic achievements during his time with the Panthers include coaching a first-team All-American, three national qualifiers, a Drake Relays champion, two Missouri Valley Conference champions, eight All-MVC performances and five UNI All-Time top five performances.
Kranz graduated from Northern Iowa in 2012 with a degree in English education. As a student-athlete, he competed in the pole vault during which he recorded six all-MVC finishes. Of those finishes, he took the top spot on three occasions while recording a personal best of 5.35m (17-6.5). Kranz also competed in three NCAA Championships between 2010 and finished seventh at the NCAA regional meet in 2009.
