Smith Leads Racers At 78th Cobb Championship

Senior Murray State golfer Jordan Smith scored the highest finish among current members of the Racer men's golf team over the weekend at the Pepsi – Paducah Bank Irvin Cobb Championship. The 78th annual event is a 36 hole tournament at Paxton Park Golf Course in Paducah, Ky.
The event features divisions for amateur and professionals.
Smith, a senior this fall with the Racers, fired rounds of 71-71 for an even par 1412 to place ninth among the group of 24 amateurs.
Other current MSU student-athletes and their amateur finishes included: Jared Gosser 71-72=143, Brock Simmons 76-67=143 and Daniel Taylor 70-73=143 all sharing 10th place. Preston French had scores of 71-75=146 and placed 20th. Matthew Zakutney placed 26th with scores of 73-74=147.
Former Racer players in the Cobb field playing as amateurs included: Chris Griffin 78-70=138 with a fourth place finish. Hunter York had scores of 70-71=141 to place eighth. Grant Price had rounds of 72-71=143 for a share of 10th place, while Chasten Howard had scores of 73-71=144 to finish 14th. Josh Rhodes finished 16th with scores of 70-75=145. Will Cox placed 17th with rounds of 75-71=146.
Racer Golf also had three former players in the Cobb playing as professionals.
Patrick Newcomb finished second with scores of 65-70=135, while Hunter Ford placed fourth with rounds of 67-69=136. Nick Newcomb placed fifth with scores of 69-69=138.
Brandon Caballero was the amateur champ with rounds of 63-69=132 and  Rick Cochran won the pro title with scores of 64-67=131.
