Head softball coach Kara Amundson has announced that sophomore Kaylyn Zierke will transfer to Murray State to continue her academic and athletic careers. Zierke is transferring from American Athletic Conference member Temple, which ended its softball program at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
"Kaylyn is going to be a solid addition for our already strong set of returners and incoming freshmen," said Amundson. "Kaylyn has competed against some of the top programs in the country and I am excited to add her skill and work ethic to the Racer softball family."
Zierke, a native of Hanover Park, Illinois, who now resides in Wayne, played and started in 44 of the Owls' 45 games last season, with 34 starts at catcher, eight at first base and two at the designated player position. She posted the highest batting average of any freshman and third-highest on the team at .236. She ended her freshman campaign with 30 hits, nine runs, five doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs, seven walks, a .323 slugging percentage and a .292 on-base percentage.
Prior to Temple, Zierke played for the three seasons at Bartlett High School before sitting out her senior season due to shoulder surgery. During her time as a Hawk, she earned all-conference honorable mention in 2010 and all-conference honors in 2011 and 2012. She also served as Bartlett's team captain for her final three seasons.
The Temple transfer brings Amundson's class of 2015 total up to six. Freshmen Haven Campbell, Erika Downey, Maddy Feeney, Julia Liceaga and Emily Reed all committed to the Racers in late 2013.
