Soccer Begins Groves Era; Exhibition Sunday

The Murray State women's soccer team's 2014 season is officially underway as the team prepares for its inaugural season under first-year head coach Jeremy Groves. Fans will be able to get a glimpse of the 2014 Racers on Sunday when they travel to Western Kentucky for their lone exhibition of the preseason.
With a week of grueling practices during another hot August in the Commonwealth already in the books, the Racers are beginning to gel as a team. On Thursday, after beginning the day with work on fundamentals, the practice ended with a three-team, intra-squad scrimmages with each of the three coaches playing on one of the three sides.
Murray State will return 14 players from last season's squad including eight starters. Amongst the eight returning starters will be two-time All-OVC Julie Mooney and freshman standout goalkeeper Savannah Haberman. Mooney scored a team-high seven goals and had a career-high seven assists a year ago, while Haberman set the MSU single-season saves mark with 111, including a program and conference record 23 in the season finale versus Austin Peay.
On Sunday, Groves will get his first look at his team and its progress so far when MSU travels to Bowling Green for an exhibition with Western Kentucky. Kick-off at the WKU Soccer Complex is scheduled for 1 p.m., and live stats will be available at GoRacers.com.
