The following is the first report from Racer Soccer student-athlete Halle Pinkham. She is Murray State Athletics' first campus reporter for the Ohio Valley Conference. The OVC Correspondent program features a student from each league member. Halle's reports and those from around the league are featured on the OVCExtra.com blog.
With every new school year comes the addition of brand new equipment, new team members, and a fresh outlook on the season. But this fall in Murray State Athletics, something else is catching on.
Â
The "Shoes Up" pregame chant that Murray State Football does has been adopted by Racer Soccer and everyone is having fun with it.
Â
Leading the charge is former player, now student manager, Tasha Merritt.
Â
"It was something we heard at the pep rally when the football coach had everyone do it," Said Merritt, who is from Aberyswth, Wales. "It just got everyone going. We liked it and brought it to our first game and it got everyone going. So before each game we've done it and it gets everyone in the right mental frame."
Â
The Shoes Up chant is very catchy. "Racers ready? … Mount Up! Racers ready? … Mount up!" – These are the exact words you'll hear right before game time. While doing the chant, your hands are in the air making the shape of a pair of horseshoes.
Â
"I was excited," said Racer Football Coach Chris Hatcher when he found out the soccer team was doing the Shoes Up chant. "This is a chant we've been doing since I've been the coach. I'm fired up that some of the other sports have taken hold of it. I think that if everybody buys in, it's something our fans will really enjoy for many years to come. We're fired up about being Racers."
Â
You can see Racer Soccer do Shoes Up Friday at 3 p.m. when they host IUPUI at Cutchin Field. The Racers are also home Sunday at noon against Northern Kentucky. MSU Football is back at home against Jacksonville State (Sept. 27). All three games will have streaming online video at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
