Racers' Jordan Smith Eyes Title On Home Course

Murray State's Jordan Smith has his eyes on a championship after he fired rounds of 68-69 for a 5-under-par 137 at the MSU Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
Smith will try and become the Racers' fourth medalist in the last five seasons Tuesday when the final 18 holes are played beginning at 9 a.m.
A Murray native, Smith made seven birdies and an eagle in the two rounds and led the Racers to a third place spot after 36 holes with scores of 292-290=582. The Racers begin the final round seven shots off the lead of co-leaders Alabama State and Wright State as each carded identical rounds of 291-284=575. UT Martin is in fourth place at 583, with Eastern Kentucky in fifth place at 585.
Other scores from the Racers included Brock Simmons in 19th place with scores of 72-76=148 and Preston French in 28th place with rounds of 76-73=149. Matthew Zakutney was in 34th place with rounds of 76-74=150 and Jared Gosser had a spot in 46th with scores of 79-74=153.
Murray State's Gold team had a spot in ninth place with scores of 299-302=601. The Racers were led by T.J. Ferry with a spot in ninth place after scores of 70-73=143. Duncan McCormick was in 19th place with rounds of 71-77=148. Myles Morrissey and Daniel Taylor shared 51st place, each had scores of 79-76=155. Nick Choate carded rounds of 80-77=157 for a spot in 59th place. Choate and Taylor were playing their first collegiate rounds at MSU as freshmen.
The Racers' gold team trailed Missouri Baptist (596) in eighth place and Morehead State (595) in seventh place. The rest of the field was made up by Northern Kentucky tied with the Racers for ninth at 601 and the NKU B team at 604. John A. Logan and Christian Brothers shared 11th place at 607.
MSU's Smith trails leader Francis Berthiaume of Alabama State who had scores of 67-66=133 and Nick Scott of Wright State with rounds of 69-67=136. The Racers will be paired with ASU and WSU in the final round meaning the top teams and individuals will be competing head-to-head in the final round. The trio of Berthiaume, Scott and Smith accounted for six of the 10 scores the field of 75 players posted in the 60's today.
Tuesday's final round at Miller Memorial begins at 9 a.m. in a shotgun start.
