Zakutney leads Racer Golf At Cardinal Collegiate

Sophomore Matthew Zakutney led the Murray State men's golf team with a spot in 15th place after the first day of play at the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the UL Golf Course in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
Zakutney, from Paducah, Ky., carded a 1-under-par 71 in his afternoon round that featured five birdies after he shot a 75 in the morning 18. Zakutney's 146 total led the Racers in the field of 84 competitors.
Jordan Smith, a senior from Murray, was in 23rd place after scores of 74-73=147. His afternoon round was rock-solid with 17 pars on the UL course that is playing to a par of 72 and 7,036 yards.
Other MSU scores included T.J. Ferry who had a spot in 40th place with scores of 73-78=151 and Preston French in 68th place after scores of 75-81=156. Brock Simmons had rounds of 74-89=163 and was in 82nd place.
Duncan McCormick was third among the individuals in the field and 40th overall with rounds of 74-77=151.
The Racers had scores of 296-303=599 and stood in 11th place, tied with High Point after the first 36 holes. MSU has Tuesday's final round to make a run at Northern Kentucky (597), Southern Illinois (596), DePaul (594) and Western Kentucky (592). Louisiana-Monroe was the first day leader at 580, ahead of host Louisville (581), Austin Peay (582), Eastern Kentucky (585), UT Martin (586) and Cincinnati (587).
