The Murray State women's golf team opened the season Monday with two teams in the hunt at the Jan Weaver-MSU Invitational at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Kentucky.
Led by a 1-under-par 71 by Abbi Stamper in round two, the Murray State Gold team carded scores of 309-301 and had a spot in fourth place in the field of 12 teams at the sixth annual 54-hole event at Drake Creek. The Murray State Navy team was in fifth place with scores of 309-306=615.
The Racer Gold team had Stamper at the top with rounds of 74-71=145 for a spot in second place in the field of 75 competitors. Moa Folke was in seventh place after rounds of 75-75=150, while Anna Moore held down 30th place with scores of 81-76=157. Leah Judd had scores of 79-79=158, while Summer Simmons was in 65th position after rounds of 90-84=174.
The Racer Navy squad was led by Sydney Trimble and Jacklyn Van Meter each with a share of 12th place. Trimble had scores of 78-73=151, while Van Meter carded scores of 75-76=151. Minta Yin was in 26th place with scores of 78-78=156, while Sophie Hillier was in 30th place with rounds of 78-79=157. Gina Nuzzo held down 44th place with rounds of 80-81=161.
Both Racer squads are chasing leader Southern Illinois who put together scores of 304-292=596, ahead of second place Western Kentucky (295-313=608) and third place Tennessee Tech (306-303=609).
SIU's Brooke Cusamano was in the lead for the medalist honor with rounds of 74-68=142, while MSU's Stamper was in second place with rounds of 74-71=145. Samantha Griffith of Lipscomb held down third place with scores of 71-75=146.
The rest of the Weaver-MSU Invitational field was made up by: Cumberlands (615), Belmont (619), Austin Peay (627), Lipscomb (627), SIUE (630), Northern Kentucky (662) and Tennessee State (679).
Tuesday's final round at Drake Creek will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
