Racers Sweep Weekly Soccer Honors

For the first time since 2012, the Murray State soccer team swept the adidas® OVC weekly honors, the league announced Tuesday. Harriet Withers, Taylor Stevens, and Alex Steigerwald were named as the Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, for helping propel the Racers to a 2-0 week on the road at Morehead State and Tennessee Tech.
Withers takes home the honor of Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career after scoring the seventh goal of the season against Morehead State in the ninth minute to set the tone of the match in the Racers favor. Though she didn't score a goal against Tennessee Tech, Withers proved she could still do her part to get the win in other ways by providing the assist in both of the Racers goals.
Stevens won her third straight Defensive Player of the Week award, a new MSU record, by helping lead her team to a third straight shutout against Morehead State. She also had an assist in the game winning goal against the Eagles, on top of scoring a goal of her own. In the match against Tennessee Tech, Stevens scored the game winning goal for the Racers and also had an assist in the first goal scored by Murray State.
Alex Steigerwald takes home the Goalkeeper of the Week award for the second straight week after recording her third straight clean sheet against Morehead State. Though Tennessee Tech snapped the shutout streak for the Racers, the one goal allowed was just the second goal allowed by Steigerwald in the past five matches.
Murray State hopes to continue its winning streak as it returns home for the final three games of the season at home this weekend. On Friday, the Racers will go up against SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m. On Sunday at 1 p.m., the Racers will host Eastern Illinois. Following the match on Sunday, Racer soccer will be honoring the team's seniors in a special Senior Day ceremony.
