Softball Wraps-Up Fall With Three Wins
10/28/2015 3:36:00 PM | Softball
The Racers started off hot putting up 18 runs against Heartland, including a perfect 3-for-3 performance by Shelbey Miller and two home runs from Maggie Glass. Haven Campbell and J.J. Francis combined for a three-hitter in the game, while striking out two batters each.
In game two versus Heartland, MSU scored just two runs, but that would be all they needed in the shutout victory. Jessica Twaddle scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth after a single by Maggie Glass, who was later driven in by Erika Downey. Mason Robinson stuck out three and allowed just one hit in the first four innings, while Amber Van Duyse went hitless in the final three.
In the opener against Dyersburg, the Racers ran into trouble towards the end of the game, allowing 11 runs in the final three innings en route to the 11-10 loss. Twaddle was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a home run and a run in the game, while Miller and Jocelynn Rodgers had two hits each.
In game two, however, the Racers pitched another shutout thanks to the combined efforts of Campbell and Francis in the circle. At the plate, MSU scored 12 runs and were led by a 3-for-4 performance from Glass which included three RBIs, two runs a home run and a walk.
As a team, MSU outscored its opponents 72-16 in eight fall games, while also outhitting them .368 to .142. Twaddle led the Racers in the fall with a .636 clip and was followed by freshman Madison Culver at .600. Campbell stepped away from the pitcher's circle this fall to hit .500, while Glass finished at .414 leading the team with five home runs and tying twaddle for a team-high 11 RBIs.
As a staff, Murray State pitchers posted just a 1.93 ERA with a 2.3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Campbell racked up three wins, while Robinson had two, as each finished the fall not allowing a single earned run. Francis was also solid for MSU, finishing with an ERA of just 0.75 and four saves.
Following the eight-game mini-season in which her team went 7-1, head coach Kara Amundson commented on the performance of her team. '"The fall is always a fun time to be able to compete as a team, but also to really be able to focus on making adjustments," said the fourth-year skipper. "We got to see everyone, both freshman and returners, compete at a high level in our fall games as well as our Blue/Gold series. We also have had the opportunity to grow and connect as a team during the fall which is important, which overall makes me really excited for the upcoming spring."
The Racers will kick-off their 2016 campaign Feb. 12-13 at the 2015 Kick-Off Classic hosted by Kennesaw State. Murray State's first game in the tournament will be Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. CT against Loyola Chicago.
