Murray State women's soccer student-athletes Taylor Stevens and Taylor Richerson were named the adidas® OVC Soccer Defensive and Offensive Players of the week. Weekly voting comes from the sports information directors from the member schools of the Ohio Valley Conference.
This is the first time Stevens has earned the award this season and the third in her career. This is the first weekly honors for Richerson this season and the first of her career.
Stevens was a strong presence at midfield and defense for the Racers matches against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. MSU limited its opponents to only four goals for the entire weekend in two wins. In the 4-3 win against UT Martin, Stevens and the defense didn't allow a single corner kick by the Skyhawks.
Against SEMO, Stevens helped lead the Racer defense to a shutout the first half. MSU also limited the Redhawks to only six shots for the entire match and won the game 4-1. Stevens had a goal in each of the weekend's matches. The first goal was unassisted and the first of the match against UT Martin. The second goal was a header off a corner kick to put the Racers up 2-0 against SEMO.
Richerson set a career high for assists (2) in the Racers match against UT Martin, followed by a career high in goals for a match (2) against SEMO. In the match against the Skyhawks, Richerson found Harriet Withers twice for goals. She followed her impressive performance against UT Martin with an even more impressive performance against SEMO. With her first goal, Richerson created a one-on-one opportunity to score. Her second goal in the match created insurance for the Racers in their 4-1 victory.
The Racers will be back in action on Friday as they take on Belmont in Nashville. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park.
The next home match for MSU will be October 23 when the Racers take on SIUE.
