Five 2015 NCAA tournament teams, including two games with Women's College World Series participant Auburn, and 18 home games highlight the 2016 Murray State softball schedule released by head coach Kara Amundson Thursday. Other NCAA tournament teams on the 2016 slate are 2015 OVC champion Tennessee Tech, Ball State, Western Kentucky and super regional participant Kentucky.
"I am very excited about the schedule for this upcoming year," said Amundson. "There are a variety of pre-season tournaments scheduled that will allow us to develop as a team and see some of the best competition in the country. We firmly believe to be the best, you have to play the best and our schedule reflects that. We are coming off of a record setting year for the program and this schedule will help us to build on that success. We are also incredibly excited about being able to play at home more this year where we have incredible facilities and great fans and we thank them for their constant support."
The Racers will open their 2016 slate at the 2016 Kick-Off Classic hosted by Kennesaw State in Kennesaw, Georgia on Feb. 12-13 where opponents will include the host Owls, North Carolina Central and East Tennessee State. MSU's first official game of the season will be the tournament opener on Feb. 12 against the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago.
From there, the Racers will make the short trip to Bowling Green on Feb. 20-21 where they will take on Missouri State twice, hosts Western Kentucky and Austin Peay, in a rare non-conference match-up. Murray State will then close out February with a trip to the heart of Cajun country for a three game set with Northwestern State in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
The Racers will stay in the Deep South the following weekend where they will take Auburn on Thursday night followed by an appearance in Auburn's Wilson/DeMarini Classic on the weekend. While in Auburn, MSU will also take on Bryant, Georgia State and Indiana. For its final weekend before OVC play, the Racers will travel to Jacksonville, Florida for two games with Jacksonville and one with Ball State.

The 2016 home opener for Murray State will take place on March 16 at Racer Field with a doubleheader against Evansville. The Racers will open OVC play that weekend on March 19-20 in Cape Girardeau at Southeast Missouri.
Other away conference games for Murray State this season include doubleheaders with Eastern Kentucky on March 25, Morehead State on March 26 and Tennessee State on April 9. The Racers will also close out their 2016 season on the rod with a three-game set at Austin Peay on May 7-8.
The non-conference midweek games for the Racers continue to have a regional flare as the Racers will host Western Kentucky on April 6 and travel to Memphis on March 30 and Southern Illinois on April 13. For the second year in a row, MSU will take on Kentucky, this time in Lexington on March 23. The final mid-week game will be a new series for the Racers, as they will travel to Nashville on April 20 to take on Lipscomb.
On April 2-3, the Racers will host Eastern Illinois for a three-game series, followed by a doubleheader against Belmont at Racer Field on April 10 to begin four straight weekends of home action. The 2015 OVC regular season champions, SIUE, come to town on April 16-17, followed by a visit from last year's tournament champions, Tennessee Tech, and Jacksonville State on April 23 and 24, respectively. MSU will close it outs home schedule on April 30 and May 1 for senior weekend against UT Martin.
