2/2/2015 6:34:00 PM | Women's Golf, Women's Tennis, Women's Volleyball
The Murray State women's golf, tennis, and volleyball team were recognized by the Murray Woman's Club on Monday. It was a celebration dinner for the student-athletes who were a part of their 2014 Championship Teams.
Â
The Murray Woman's Club was established in November of 1905, and became incorporated in May of 1948. The purpose is the mutual improvement of its members and the promotions of any worthy public cause. Practical, civic and educational work shall be undertaken as well as purely cultural studies. Â
Â
The women's tennis team got the ball rolling for championships in mid-April. By clinching the No.1 seed they earned a bye into the semi-final round where they faced #5 UT Martin. After they defeated UTM, they had to face the two-time defending OVC Champions, Eastern Kentucky. Megan Blue clinched the biggest point of the season during the singles matches to give the team their seventh OVC title, and earn their way into the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time.
Â
The women's golf team was not far behind as they took their ninth OVC title later that April. After the first day of the tournament, the Racers had a 12-shot deficit to overcome. Delaney Howson's birdie putt on the par-3 18th sealed a two-shot win for the Racers and the OVC's automatic spot in the NCAA tournament. The team put in scores of 307-298-310=915, two shots ahead of defending champions Eastern Kentucky at 295-304-318=917.
Â
With a couple of months in between, the women's volleyball team clinched their OVC title in November. The team became the No. 1 seed and was set to host at Racer Arena for the entirety of the tournament. The team downed Southeast Missouri 3-0, swept Tennessee Tech 3-0, and finally in the Championship game swept Belmont for the OVC title. This marked the second OVC Championship for volleyball. Kristen Besselsen and Taylor Olden ended the match with two straight kills to give MSU its 18th sweep of the season and leave them undefeated at Racer Arena.
Â
The women's tennis team has begun their 2015 season 4-1 and will compete next on Friday against Memphis. The women's golf team will tee off in the Southern Mississippi Lady Eagle Invitational on March 9.Â
