Bench Award Release
Murray State's Tyler Lawrence has been named to the 2015 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, given annually to the top catcher in Division I. Lawrence is one of 75 catchers named to the list whose talent, toughness and integrity most closely resembled the legend after whom the award is named.
Lawrence, who has started all 15 games this season for the Racers, leads the team in multiple offensive categories including, batting average (.313), hits (15), extra-base hits (7), RBIs (11) and on-base percentage (.431). His two home runs so far this season rank second on the team.
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, announced May 14. Ballots will then be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series with the winner being announced June 25 at the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
Johnny Bench played 17 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds where he was a two-time National League MVP, World Series MVP, 14-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. Bench was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
