Matthew Johnson drove-in a career-high four RBIs to lead Murray State to a 4-2 victory Sunday over UT Martin in Edwardsville, Ill. The Racers won two-of-three in the series and earned their first series victory of the season.
Johnson got the Racers (5-10, 2-1 OVC) on the board first in the first inning with a two RBI double to left that scored Tyler Lawrence and Dalton West. It marked the sixth time this season that Murray has scored in the first inning, improving its mark to 3-3 on the season when doing so.
The Skyhawks (2-9, 1-2 OVC) responded to tie things up in the second inning with a pair of runs of their own to make it 2-2. Johnson would go on to deliver the game-winning RBI in the third with another double, this time to right field that scored Brock Downey. Johnson added an insurance run for MSU in the seventh with a sacrifice fly that brought home Taylor Mathews to make it 4-2 Racers.
Brandon Hicks went on to close-out the game in the ninth for the Racers, picking up his first save of the season. Hicks pitched 3.1 innings of relief and allowed no runs on two hits while striking-out four batters. John Lollar picked up the win in the start for the Racers. Lollar went 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on 11 hits.
Johnson was the only Racer in the win to get multiple hits. Downey, Lawrence, Kipp Moore and West collected the other hits for MSU. UTM collected 13 hits in the contest but left 12 on base while the Racers stranded eight. Murray also turned a pair of double plays in the victory.
The Racers return to action Tuesday as Northern Illinois comes to Reagan Field for a two-game set. MSU returns to conference play next weekend with three games at SIUE.
