Splendid Round For Racers At The Hermitage

With one more event before next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the Murray State men's golf had a spot in fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round at the Big Blue Intercollegiate at Hermitage Golf Club in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Racers had a splendid 4-under-par 284 in the morning round featuring a 4-under 68 by Jordan Smith and a 70 from Brock Simmons. However an afternoon 291 had MSU at 575 and in need of a final round rally. Belmont was the 36-hole leader at 554, ahead of Tennessee Tech (565), West Georgia (572) and Morehead State (574).

Smith's scores of 68-74=142 (2-under) had him in 10th place in the field of 75 competitors.

Other Murray State scores included Brock Simmons in 14th place with rounds of 70-73=143 (1-under) and Jared Gosser in 25th place after scores of 72-73=145. Duncan McCormick had a spot in 33rd place after rounds of 76-71=147 and Preston French was in 38th place with rounds of 74-74=148.

Murray State's Matthew Zakutney and Myles Morrissey are playing the event as one of 15 individuals. Zakutney was in fourth among the individuals and 54th overall with rounds of 75-76=151. Morrissey had scores of 76-77=153 and was in eighth place among the solo players and 62nd overall.

After the Racers in fifth place, the rest of the top-10 was made up by North Greenville and Northern Kentucky (577), UT Martin (581), Green Bay (583) and host Tennessee State (589). John A. Logan (596), Trevecca-Nazarene (600) and West Alabama (604) rounded out the field.

Belmont's Ashton Van Horne was the medalist leader at 14-under with rounds of 65-65=130.

The final round is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The Hermitage course is playing to a par-72 and 7,157 yards.
