Soccer Wraps-Up Spring Season
4/13/2015 2:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Murray State women's soccer team concluded their spring soccer season recently with a perfect 3-0 record. The spring non-competition segment was a time for coaches and fans to get a better look at the team that will be returning, especially after losing eight seniors from the 2014 team to graduation. While head coach Jeremy Groves added nine to the 2015 roster, they will not make their debuts in blue and gold until August.
Â
"The spring for us has been fantastic," said Groves. "We have really grown and improved as individuals and as a group. The willingness and toughness to get better and also compete is very special within this group of players."
Â
"Every day whether training or in the weight room these young women have pushed each other. Â I'm very proud of where this group is at right now," added Groves. "In the spring we always talk about getting better on the field, like I mentioned before both individually and as a group but, also mentally too. We have made some huge strides this spring, breaking down mental barriers that existed before. Competing against very good programs helped with this and we now know what it takes and how to win games against top opponents."
Â
Taking a look at the spring matchups the Racers took on a wide array of opponents. "Our spring games presented different challenges along the way which the team rose to," Groves said.
Â
The Racers began the spring on February 25 with an impressive 2-1 victory over Vanderbilt.
Murray State followed its performance in Nashville with a dominating 2-0 victory over Southern Indiana at home, about a month later.
Â
"Our first game against Vanderbilt was huge; we played against a team in a coaching transition that will be very good next year. We learned that we cannot only compete in, but win these types of games," said Groves. "Against USI, Individually, we met game goals that we had set out for them. The second game showed our level of maturity and never looking past an opponent."
Â
MSU ended its spring season in Lexington, where they handed Kentucky a 2-1 defeat on their own home pitch. The win was quite a coup for the Racers, as the Wildcats advanced all the way to the round of 16 in last season's NCAA tournament.
Â
"Our last game against UK, like the Vanderbilt game, was huge for us," added Groves. "Mentally it propels us into the fall on a high note, knowing that we can compete against anyone."
Â
For Groves, while the games did not count towards any win-loss record, he believes they helped his team achieve something much larger. "While we know that these were only spring games, it shows that winning is a habit. We know we still have a ton of work to do to reach our goal of winning the conference next season, but it shows how far this group has come over the past year."
Â
Murray State now turns its attention to the season opener on August 23, when it tries to take down another SEC opponent, Mississippi State, in Starkville.
