Spring Football: The O-Line

As Murray State football enters the middle of its spring season, the focus is now on the offense. Some of the biggest players on the team, both in stature and importance, are the offensive linemen. This season they will be led, in part, by senior Hunter Kingston.
"Our offense is strong every year. So when the defense comes out, throws a little bit at us and they get a few stops and that is really promising," said Kingston.
Gordon Steele is in his first year as coach of the offensive line. Steele plans on being very physical off the ball and physical across the board.
"It's my first year having the whole offensive line and I'm pretty fired up about it." Steele continued, "I played center, coached the tackles and then spent some time at LSU on defense and saw that side of the ball and now I'm back with offense and I'm really enjoying it."
As Steele prepares the o-line for the season he already has his eyes on some of the leaders.
"Hunter Kingston is a good leader for us," Steele states. "He's a fifth year senior who plays hard and nasty. He is a great offensive lineman and he is kind of the backbone of everything here. He kind of gets everything going and holds everyone accountable."
Meanwhile, Kingston believes the leadership of the line belongs to the unit as a whole.
"We have got a lot of older guys, especially in the o-line. Robert Olive and I] have been together for a while, we started last year together. We are all leaders together. It's a strong unit."
Not only is Steele an offensive line coach, but he is also the run game coordinator. The Racers were ranked third nationally in the passing offense, so the challenge this season comes in to how to open up the run game.
"Being the run game coordinator this season is fun, because I get to come up with new ideas on ways for us to run the ball more. When you start throwing it around the yard like we do, it opens up some stuff inside for us. I think, hopefully, we will see a lot more of that in the future, because those guys are getting better every day; being low, being physical and running the ball down the inside." Steele added.

Kingston know that no matter how good the passing or running games are the success of the offense as a whole begins and ends with his unit. "It all starts out front and hopefully that will help us to win the OVC and get into the playoffs."
