Nine-Run Inning Dooms Racers in Opener

A nine-run seventh inning by Tennessee Tech proved to be the difference as the Murray State baseball team opened its series with the Golden Eagles with an 11-4 loss Friday night in Cookeville, Tenn. All 11 of TTU's runs came with two outs.
Tennessee Tech (16-19, 9-10 OVC) collected four hits in the seventh inning and MSU (14-25, 9-7 OVC) committed a pair of errors in the big inning. After the Golden Eagles loaded the bases to open the inning with no outs, Racer starter Brad Boegel was able to get two outs in the inning without relinquishing a run. However, an RBI walk and a wild pitch allowed TTU to lengthen its 2-1 lead to 4-1 and were able to pile on from there the rest of the inning. A three-run double from Dylan Bosheers was the biggest blow in the inning to the Racers.
Boegel had a solid outing on the mound prior to the seventh. For the outing, Boegel pitched 6.2 innings and allowed eight runs. Just two of those runs were earned, on seven hits. Tanner Edge and Dalton West also pitched relief in the loss for the Racers.
A two-run home run from Ryan Flick in the fourth inning put the Golden Eagles on the board first in the contest. MSU was able to respond in the seventh on a Nick Moore RBI groundout that scored Anthony Bayus. Bayus and Lawrence opened the inning with a pair of singles but were only able to push across one run.
In the eighth, the Racers were able to rally a bit, as Clay Kelly, Rick Linton and Matthew Johnson were all able to deliver RBI hits. For the game, MSU had nine hits while Tech collected 10 hits. Bayus led the Racers with two hits in the loss and he and Linton both had a double. Pokey Harris had a triple to left center to start the Racers' scoring in the eighth.
The two teams will return to action Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon. The series was originally to be finished Saturday and Sunday but due to forecasted rain on Sunday, games two and three of the series will be tomorrow.
