In a historic evening at Murray State, three Jacksonville State pitchers combined for a two-hitter against the Murray State baseball team Thursday night under the lights at Johnny Reagan Field as the Racers dropped game one of their series with the Gamecocks 4-1. It was the first-ever night game in program history for the Racers.
Brock Downey took the tough luck loss in the game as he pitched 8.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking-out a career-high 13 batters in the loss.
JSU (17-9, 6-4 OVC) struck first on the scoreboard as Hayden White hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the third inning, while a Ryan Serba double down the left field line with two outs in the fourth pushed the Gamecock lead to 2-0. Matthew Johnson's solo home run in the fifth cut the deficit to 2-1 for MSU, but that was as close as the Racers would get. An Elliott McCummings two-run homer to left center field with two down in the ninth inning pushed the JSU lead to 4-1.
Taylor Mathews recorded the Racers' (12-18, 7-6 OVC) other hit in the loss, a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh. Mathews was picked-off of first base later in the inning on a throw down from the catcher.
The Gamecocks got excellent defense all night to help stalwart the Racer offense as center fielder Gavin Golsan made a pair of spectacular catches against the outfield fence to rob MSU of a pair of extra-base hits. Clayton Daniel and Josh Bobo also made a couple of nice defensive plays up the middle to steal hits from the Racers as well.
Game two of the series is again scheduled to be a night game as the two teams square off at 6 p.m. Friday at Reagan Field.
