Yin Leads Racers In OVC Championship

The Murray State Racers fired an opening 312 Monday and stand in fifth place after the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, at Hampton Cove Golf Club.

Minta Yin carded a 2-over-par 74 to get a spot in fourth place in the field of 50 competitors. Yin made her first of two birdies on the day on the par-4 sixth and made the turn at 2-over 38. Coming in, Yin birdied the par-5 17th.
She will start round two Tuesday morning four shots off the lead for medalist honors.

The Racers carded a 312 in round one and stand in fifth place behind Belmont (306) and Tennessee Tech (304). The leader after 18 holes is Jacksonville State (301) with a one-shot lead on Eastern Kentucky (302).

Abbi Stamper carded a 78 and had a spot in 17th place, while Sophie Hiller was in 25th place with a 79. Jacklyn Van Meter carded an 81 and was in 31st place. Moa Folke had an 82 and was in 38th place.

Austin Peay and Morehead State shared sixth place at 313. Eastern Illinois carded a 327 and was in eighth place, while SIUE was in ninth at 329. Tennessee State was in 10th place with a 339.

The Racers begin round two Tuesday morning with the first of five tee times at 9:40 a.m. MSU will be paired with Austin Peay and Belmont.

Yin's 74 earned a share of a four-way tie for fourth place with Anna Magnusson of Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky's Emilie Simmons and Angie Varona of Jacksonville State. The first round leader is Whitney Robertson of Tennessee Tech with a 2-under 70, ahead of Mallory Sullivan of Belmont with a 71. JSU's Melania Bajo Geijo is in third place with a 73.

Hampton Cove GC is at the northern end of the Alabama's famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Renovated in 2008, The Highlands course has been restored to its original Scottish Links design and will play to a par-72 and a length of 6,050 yards for the OVC event.

Monday night, the Racers and the rest of the OVC women's golf teams gather for the annual OVC golf awards banquet.

The OVC men's event will be played later in the week (April 24-26) in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at The Shoals GC, another great layout in the RTJ Golf trail.
