Yin Challenges For OVC Golf Prize

The Murray State women's golf team showed improvement and sophomore Minta Yin continued to make a run at the medalist title Tuesday at the Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championship in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, at Hampton Cove Golf Club.

The Racers were six shots better in round two, but start the final round on Wednesday 16 shots from the lead. They posted a 306 a day after a first round 312. MSU's 36-hole total of 618 put them in a tie for fourth place with Morehead State.

Yin had back to back scores of 74 for a 148 total. She's in fourth place heading into Wednesday's final round, three shots off the lead of Tennessee Tech's Whitney Robertson who had scores of 70-75=145. Yin made two birdies on the front today and made the turn with an even par 36. On the Back nine, she rolled in a downhill 50-foot putt at the par-4 16th.

Other MSU scores included Abbi Stamper, who moved from 17th to eighth place with a second round 74 after an opening 78. Sophie Hillier had scores of 79-80=159 and was in 26th place, while Moa Folke was in 29th place after rounds of 82-78=160. Jacklyn Van Meter was in 36th place after rounds of 81-81=162.

Jacksonville State was the 36-hole leader at 602, Tennessee Tech (608) was two shots behind second place Eastern Kentucky (606). After the Racers and Morehead State at 618, Belmont (619) and Austin Peay (624) were in sixth and seventh place. Eastern Illinois (643), SIUE (647) and Tennessee State (680) rounded out the field of 10 teams.

The Racers begin the final round Wednesday morning with the first of five tee times at 9:40 a.m. MSU will be paired with Morehead State and Belmont.

Hampton Cove is at the northern end of the Alabama's famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Scottish Links design is playing to a par-72 and a length of 6,050 yards for the OVC event.

The OVC men's event will be played later in the week (April 24-26) in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at The Shoals GC, another course in the RTJ Golf trail.
