Yin Takes Runner-Up At OVC Championship

Murray State's Minta Yin posted a runner-up finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championship in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, at Hampton Cove Golf Club.

Yin, a sophomore from Beijing, China, posted scores of 74-74-70 for a 2-over-par total of 218, just one shot behind medalist Sophie Levin of Eastern Kentucky who had scores of 76-73-68 for a total of 217.

The Racers finished sixth with rounds of 312-306-306=924.

Other Murray State finishes included Abbi Stamper with a ninth place showing after scores of 78-74-77=229. Jacklyn Van Meter finished 28^th with rounds of 81-81-77=239 and Moa Folke placed 31^st with scores of 82-78-82=242. Sophie Hillier had scores of 79-80-87=246 and placed 39^th.

Coming off an OVC Championship win in 2014, the Racers had hoped for better this week.

"We did (hope for better)," Murray State Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. "But I saw a lot of positives this week, especially Minta. We're a young team and I think that showed with nerves and that kind of thing. The future is bright for our program if we keep working hard and keep improving."

Yin, just missed a share of the OVC individual trophy and turned in an outstanding sophomore season for the Racers.

"She held it together and played just fantastic this week," Milkman added. "We could see that coming with the way she gained momentum this spring. We wish she could've gotten the win today, but we're extremely proud of her."

Eastern Kentucky edged out Jacksonville State by one shot 902-903, while Tennessee Tech placed third at 914. Belmont (918), Morehead State (920), Murray State (924) and Austin Peay (942) made up the top-7. SIUE (969), Eastern Illinois (980) and Tennessee State (1041) made up the 10-team field.

Hampton Cove hosted the OVC Championship for the first time this week. Part of Alabama's famed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Highlands Course at Hampton Cove played to a par-72 and a length of 6,050 yards for the OVC event.

The OVC men's event starts Friday and runs through Sunday in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at The Shoals GC, another course in the RTJ Golf trail.
