Racers Post Solid Start At OVC Championship

The Murray State Men's golf team carded a 9-over-par 297 in round one of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and had a spot in seventh place at the Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Jordan Smith and Brock Simmons each posted a 1-over-par 73 in round one and had a share of a five-way tie for 11th place. The Racer duo was six shots off the leading being paced by Jacksonville State's Pablo Torres who carded a 5-under-par 67. Ted Moon of Belmont and Chris Baker of Austin Peay were in second place with a 69.

Other Racer scores included Jared Gosser with a spot in 23rd place with a 75, while Duncan McCormick was in 29th place after a 76. Preston French had a spot in 41st place after a 78.

The Racers' 297 earned a spot in seventh place behind sixth place Eastern Kentucky (295).

Belmont was the first round leader at 289, a stroke up on second place Tennessee Tech (290) and four shots ahead of Austin Peay (293). UT Martin and Jacksonville State share fourth place at 294.

The rest of the field of 11 teams was made up by Morehead State and SIUE (306), Tennessee State (309) and Eastern Illinois (315).

MSU will be paired with Morehead State and SIUE. The first tee time is Saturday morning at 8:50 a.m.

The Fighting Joe course at The Shoals is playing to a par-72 and a length of 7,258 yards.
