The Murray State baseball team dropped its series finale against Southeast Missouri Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field, 10-2. The Racers went just 3-for-19 with runners on base and were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the loss.
SEMO (28-15, 19-5 OVC) was able to go 8-for-27 with runners on base and was 5-for-18 with runners in position to score. The Redhawks also out-hit the Racers 16-10 while MSU (14-31, 9-12 OVC) left 13 runners on base.
SEMO scored the first seven runs of the game, one in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth to open up a 7-0 lead. MSU was able to get on the board for the first time in the contest in the bottom of the fifth when Derek Yoder scored from first on a hit to left by Tyler Lawrence. The Redhawks were trying to throw Lawrence out at second on the play, and when Lawrence was ruled safe, Yoder took off from third to score while the Redhawks were arguing the play.
After SEMO was able to tack on runs in the seventh and eighth, Kipp Moore drilled his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth over the left field fence on a 2-0 pitch to make it 9-2 Redhawks. SEMO was able to add another run in the ninth.
Moore led the Racers on the day going 3-for-4, his second consecutive series finale with three hits. Lawrence and Yoder also had multiple hits in the loss, going 2-for-4 each. Tyler Hardin, Matthew Johnson and Nick Moore also had hits in the contest.
Sheldon Baxter took the loss for the Racers. Baxter pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs off seven hits while striking-out and walking two batters each. Tyler Anderson, Brandon Hicks and Dalton West each pitched in relief in the game. Hicks went the longest, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on five hits.
The Racers return to action Tuesday as they will face UT Martin in a non-conference contest at 6 p.m. in Union City, Tenn., at Elam Stadium.
