Racers Lose Heartbreaker to Belmont
5/2/2015 4:09:00 PM | Baseball
A Tyler Walsh RBI double down the right field line provided the game-winner as Belmont walked-off to defeat the Murray State baseball team, 3-2 Saturday in Nashville in game two of the team's three-game series.
The Racers (14-34, 9-14 OVC) clung to a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth before a Matt Beaty single through the right side scored Drew Ferguson to tie the game at 2-2. Beaty scored the game-winning run on Walsh's hit.
Brock Downey was tagged with the loss in the game. Downey pitched a great eight innings-plus for MSU, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking-out a pair of batters. Tyler Anderson came on in the ninth in relief of Downey.
Belmont (24-21, 12-10 OVC) got the scoring going on the day when they scored on a pair of Racer errors in the second inning to go up 1-0. Tyler Lawrence tied the game for the Racers in the fourth with his eighth home run of the season, a solo blast to left center field. The Racers grabbed the lead in the seventh when Kipp Moore scored on a sac fly to center from Clay Kelly. On the play, two Bruins outfielders collided on the catch and allowed Moore to score from second.
Moore collected two of the Racers' four hits in the loss. It was Moore's fourth multi-hit game of the season. Matt McGowan had the fourth hit in the game for MSU. Belmont collected eight hits in the game, four in just the ninth inning.
Belmont was able to keep the Racer lead at just one run with a pair of key defensive plays in center field. Anthony Bayus and Dalton West both flew out to the wall in center in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, which would have lengthened the lead.
The series finale of the set will be Sunday at Rose Park. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
