Sophomore first baseman Jessica Twaddle was named as the 2015 OVC Player of the Year and was one of five Racers to earn All-Conference honors Tuesday night at the OVC Awards Banquet in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Joining Twaddle on the first team was sophomore third baseman Maggie Glass, while three seniors, shortstop Alexa Becker, pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey and outfielder Mo Ramsey, were named to the second team.
Twaddle is now the second Murray State player in the six-year history of the program to earn Player of the Year honors, joining Jenna Bradley in 2011. The five all-conference awards is also a program record, surpassing the previous record of three honorees set in 2012.
Twaddle captured the OVC regular-season batting title going away with a season average of .439, clearing her nearest competitor by 36 points. She led Murray State in nearly every category including hits at 69, RBIs at 51, slugging percentage at .675 and on-base percentage at .497.
The sophomore tallied 20 multiple hit games during the season and had 16 multiple RBI games. She also began the season on a school-record 37 reached base streak, while also hitting in 19 straight games to set a different school record.
Glass also had a big season for Murray State hitting at a .312 clip with 39 runs and 44 RBIs. She led Murray State with 13 home runs on the year to go along with 11 doubles and two triples for a slugging percentage of .662.
The winningest pitcher in Murray State history and the only to win 50-plus games, Gaskey set a school-record by winning 18 games in 2015 to go along with a team-low ERA of 2.68. The school's all-time strikeout leader mowed down 122 batters this season, while limiting her opposition to a .248 average.
Becker followed Twaddle in batting average this season at .351 and led the team with 26 walks and 10 stolen bases. The school's all-time leader in runs, doubles, triples, home runs and RBIs added to her totals this season with team-highs of 52 runs and 17 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 39 RBIs. Â
The school's all-time hits leader with 221, Ramsey once again proved to be a model of consistency for Murray State this season by tallying 59 hits for a .337 average. In addition, the slap hitter walked 20 times for an on-base percentage of .405, while also scoring 45 runs and stealing nine bases.
The honors were the first of their careers for Glass and Gaskey, while Twaddle, Ramsey and Becker had previously earned OVC accolades. Twaddle was an All-Newcomer selection last season, while Becker was named to the second team in 2013. Ramsey began her career by being named to the All-Newcomer team in 2012 and followed that up last season with a first team nod.
