Racers Play Well At Irvin Cobb Championships

Murray State's Daniel Taylor was the low man among current Murray State men's golfers at the Irvin Cobb Championships over the weekend at Paxton Park Golf Course in Paducah, Kentucky.

Taylor, a sophomore from Princeton, Ky., carded rounds of 72-72 for a 2-over-par 144 to get a spot in 10th place overall.

Every member of the current Racer roster was entered into the event.

Other current Racers and their finishes included: Jared Gosser (76-69=145, 12^th place), Gabe Wheeler (75-71=146, 14^th place), Matthew Zakutney (70-76=146, 14^th), Nick Choate (78-69=147, 17^th), Preston French (76-74=150, 22^nd), Brock Simmons (76-74=150, 22^nd) and Lance Davis (80-73=153, 35^th). Duncan McCormick withdrew before the event began with an injury.

Three former Racers competed in the Cobb Championships as professionals. Patrick Newcomb took home the winner's check after scores of 66-66 for a total of 10-under-par 132. Nick Newcomb placed third with scores of 68-68=136, while Cameron Carrico placed 28^th with rounds of 75-72=147. This trio combined for four Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year awards when they wore the blue and gold of Murray State. The victory for Patrick Newcomb was his first at the Cobb Championships after five runner-up finishes.

MSU Coach Eddie Hunt's first recruit in 2002 was Jamie Frazier. He carded scores of 74-67=141 and made it to a three-way playoff for the amateur title. The playoff was won by another former Racer, Andrew Mitchell (70-71=141).
