Baseball Opens Fall Practice

The Murray State baseball team officially began practice for the 2016 season Thursday afternoon at Reagan Field. The Racers have a squad of 35 heading into the second season under Head Coach Kevin Moulder. In addition to the returners from last season's squad, MSU's newcomers will feature 10 junior college transfers, 11 true freshmen and one graduate transfer from Memphis.
Key returners for the Racers in 2016 will be Second Team All-OVC seclection from a season ago, Tyler Lawrence. Lawrence was the only Racer in 2015 to start in all 56 games and led MSU in most offensive categories. Lawrence hit .302 last season with a team-high 12 home runs and 46 RBIs. Lawrence also led the squad with 13 doubles, 62 hits, 28 extra-base hits, 27 walks, a .571 slugging percentage and was tied for second on the team with 36 runs scored.
MSU also returns a pair of All-Freshman team selections from last year in Tyler Anderson and Kipp Moore. Anderson led the Racers with a 3.16 ERA during the season and went 2-2. In 25.2 innings of work, Anderson struck-out 41 batters and had a team-best .253 opponent batting average. Anderson recorded two or more strikeouts in 11 of his 19 appearances and had two games with five strikeouts, March 24 at Arkansas State and May 12 vs. Evansville.
Moore hit .260 in 2015 and had six homers and 23 RBIs, while scoring 25 runs. During OVC play, Moore hit .277, clubbed five homers and drove in 15. Moore also led MSU with three game-winning hits during the season. Moore was a thorn in Southern Illinois' side during the season, recording the game-winners in both games against the Salukis. In MSU's 10-9 victory over Jacksonville State, Moore belted a walk-off three-run home run against the Gamecocks and the OVC's all-time saves leader, Travis Stout.
For Family Weekend, on Sept. 26, the Racers will be scrimmaging at noon out at Reagan Field. All are invited to attend the intrasquad contest. MSU's annual Blue and Gold World Series will take place later this fall and will close-out the fall slate for the Racers.
