12th Annual MSU Invitational Begins Monday

The Murray State men's golf team opens the 2014-15 season at home Monday and Tuesday (Sep. 21-22) at the MSU Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.

The event in its 12th year, will be contested over 54 holes with 36 holes being played Monday and 18 Tuesday. Monday's play begins at 8:30 a.m. and Tuesday's final round begins at 9 a.m. Both days are shotgun starts.

A field of 10 teams will compete including six Ohio Valley Conference schools: Eastern Illinois, host Murray State, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Morehead State and UT Martin. The rest of the field includes: Alabama State, Missouri Baptist, Western Illinois and Wright State.

Murray State senior Preston French is a former champion of the event. He won the individual title as a sophomore in 2013 with a score of 206. French leads a trio of MSU seniors in the starting lineup including Jared Gosser and Brock Simmons. They'll be joined by junior Matthew Zakutney and freshman Gabe Wheeler. The Racers will have four players in the field as individuals including Nick Choate, Lance Davis, Duncan McCormick and Daniel Taylor. Â

Alabama State won the 2014 event by six shots over Wright State. ASU's Francis Berthiamue was medalist with a score of 202 as he bested teammate Branson Ferrier by three shots. Jordan Smith was the best finisher for the Racers at 206 in third place.

The team scoring record (for 54 holes) was set by the Racers in 2005 of 832 (20-under-par). In the same year, Tennessee Tech's Scott Stallings set the individual scoring record of 68-63-66-197 (16-under-par). Murray State's best individual performance came from Kyle Shirley (also in 2005) with rounds of 67-67-70=204 (9-under-par).
