The Murray State Racers host the Jacksonville Gamecocks Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Kentucky. The game is the second of a doubleheader after the MSU women host JSU at 3 p.m. The Racers are staging Hero's Night honoring the region's first responders and armed service current members and veterans. The first 100 kids dressed as a super hero will get a free Murray State cape. All first responders and those from the armed services are invited to the games free.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis and commentary. Free online streaming video is on OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers are 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play after they had a poor shooting night Thursday in a 71-65 defeat to Tennessee Tech. MSU hit a season-low 28 percent from the field (18-of-64) and 21 percent from 3-point range (6-of-28). The bright spot in two OVC games is the Racers' rebounding and defense as it's good enough to win. They held TTU to 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range and MSU had 19 offensive rebounds.
In OVC play, the obvious wart on the Racers' stat sheet is they're not making shots. The Racers are hitting 35 percent from the field and 29 percent from the 3-point line. However, the free throw line is balancing that out somewhat as they're hitting 80 percent on 41-of-51. Bryce Jones has hit 15-of-18. If the Racers can begin to hit more shots, there's a good chance they can again get on a roll in league play.
The loss to TTU snapped one of the more impressive streaks in Murray State history. MSU had won 17-straight OVC games and the same number of OVC home games. The amazing streak started after SEMO beat the Racers in 2014 in the regular season final in double overtime. The home streak started after SEMO beat the Racers in the 2013 regular season final on that night, Racer Greats Isaiah Canaan and Ed Daniel were honored on Senior Day.
The game with JSU marks the end of MSU's longest home stand of the season as they will have played four-straight at the friendly confines of the CFSB Center. In the 18th season at The Bank, MSU enjoys one of the best home-court advantages in the college game. MSU is 126-23 (.886) against OVC teams and 216-37 (.857) overall. The Racers are 9-0 all-time against the Gamecocks at the CFSB Center.
Next week the Racers hit the road for the first time in the OVC season. Thursday, they play in Nashville against the Belmont Bruins. The 8 p.m. tip at the Curb Events Center will be televised by ESPNU. Saturday (Jan. 16) the Racers stay in Music City for a 7 p.m. game at Tennessee State.
