A program-record 12 Murray State softball players have been named as 2015-16 Division I All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organization announced this week. The honor is presented to players that achieved a 3.5 cumulative annual GPA or better for the academic year.
Recent graduates J.J. Francis, Erica Howard and Brianne Sanders, 2017 seniors Cayla Levins, Mason Robinson, Jocelynn Rodgers, Jessica Twaddle and Mallory Young, junior Maddy Feeney, sophomores Leah Kesel and Amber Van Duyse and former Racer Morgan Edwards all received the award for their efforts in the classroom last year.
For Howard, it was the fourth time in four years that she earned the honor, giving her the distinction of having earned the award in each year of eligibility. The 12 honorees for 2015-16 marks the second consecutive year in which MSU has set a program record for honorees, after tallying a then record 11 recipients last season.
This season, 5,152 student-athletes from seven different categories were recognized with the award, representing over 400 different institutions. This year, Division I led the way in total student-athletes honorees with 1,240.
