Murray State volleyball was able to rally for a thrilling, back-and-forth five-set match victory Friday night at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill., as the Racers defeated SIU Edwardsville 25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-12.
The Racers (9-8, 4-1 OVC) struggled offensively were most of the night, hitting just a season-low .078 in the win while SIUE (11-5, 4-1 OVC) hit .147. However, MSU was able to hit .200 in the deciding fifth set while holding the Cougars to just a .077 clip. The Cougars held a big advantage at the net defensively, out-blocking the Racers 15-7 on the night. The Racers' edge came in the serve game as MSU tallied eight aces and six serving errors while SIUE didn't record a single ace and had 12 errors.
Scottie Ingram led MSU with 16 kills in the win while also registering 10 digs for the double-double. Kristen Besselsen added 13 kills and Dacia Brown had 11 kills, hit .280 and led the team with three service aces. Besselsen and Hannah Stultz added two aces each in the victory. Besselsen led the way defensively at the net for MSU with two solo blocks and a blocking assist.
Stultz led the Racers with 32 assists on the night while also adding nine digs. Ellie Lorenz had a great match in the back row in the win, tallying a match-high 32 digs. Alex Kaufmann chipped in with 11 assists in the match.
MSU looks to make it a weekend sweep Saturday as the Racers travel to face Eastern Illinois. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
