Racers Fall Twice On Opening Day

Just The Facts
The Murray State softball team struggled offensively Friday as it opened the 2016 season with a pair of losses at the KSU Kickoff Classic at Bailey Park in Kennesaw State. Murray State fell in game one to Loyola Chicago, 9-1 in five innings, and then again in the second, 7-0, to host Kennesaw State.
Game 1 – Loyola Chicago 9, Murray St. 1 (5 Inn.)
The Turning Point
The Ramblers reeled off four straight hits, including a three-run, home run to begin a fourth inning in which it would score six runs. Loyola added three more runs in the fifth to end the game via the eight-run rule.

The Turning Point
Once again, a big inning proved fatal for Murray State, this time it was the third inning. The Owls began the frame with five consecutive base runners which included three hits and a three-run home run from Megan Veringa.

Making A Mark
On the day in which both received the first starts of their collegiate careers, both freshman Brenna Finck and sophomore Maddy Feeney tallied the first hits of their careers in the fifth inning against Loyola. In addition, Finck notched her first RBI when she brought Feeney home from third for Murray State's lone run of the game.
In A Pinch
Freshman Madison Culver came up with a huge pinch hit against Kennesaw State Friday in which she hit a double in her first collegiate at-bat.
Run The Streak
With hits in both games Friday, Maggie Glass ran her streak of consecutive games with a hit to seven and her streak of consecutive games in which she reached base safely to nine, dating back to last season.
Not Quantity, But Quality
While the Racers were outhit over the course of both games, despite averaging five per game, it was the timeliness of those hits that proved most costly. Murray State was just 1-for-11 with runners on base against Loyola and 1-for-12 against Kennesaw.
