Wheeler Leads Racers In Spring Opener In Arizona

The spring portion of the 2015-16 season got underway Saturday for the Murray State men's golf team at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona at Palm Valley Golf Club.
The Racers scored a 286 (2-under-par) in the opening round, which earned a spot in ninth place ahead of Utah Valley (287), Elon, Air Force and UT Martin all at 288.
Gabe Wheeler led the way for the Racers with a spot in 21st place after a 2-under-par 70, his lowest round thus far in his freshman season with MSU. Duncan McCormick carded a 71 and was in 31st place, while Preston French held down 38th place with an even-par 72. Jared Gosser scored a 73 and was in 52nd place, while Brock Simmons was in 74th place after a 75.
Indiana had the first round lead at 271, ahead of William & Mary at 275. UConn (277) and James Madison (278) held down third and fourth place. Arkansas State and Seton Hall shared fifth place at 279. Missouri State (281) and DePaul (284) had seventh and eighth place. St. John's (289), Drake (292), Loyola (MD) (297) and Manhattan College (310) made up the rest of the field of 17 teams.
Zach Saback of UConn was the individual leader with a 7-under-par 65 among the field of 105 competitors.
The Racers were fourth in the field with 19 birdies in round one.
The Palm Valley course is playing to a par-72 and 7,015 yards.
Murray State's round two begins at 7:50 a.m. Pacific Time with playing partners Utah Valley, Elon and Air Force.
