Gutzler Receives More National Accolades

Murray State outfielder Brandon Gutzler continues to receive national accolades for his phenomenal performance last week in the Racers' five games against Harris-Stowe and Northern Illinois. In addition to being named this week's Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week and the ADIDAS OVC Player of the Week, he was also honored Tuesday by the NCBWA and College Sports Madness as their National Player of the Week.
Gutzler hit .571 (12-for-21) for the week and had eight extra-base hits, five of which were home runs, collected 22 RBIs, scored 10 runs, had a .690 on-base percentage and slugged 1.429 in leading the Racers to four victories.
For the week, Gutzler had four multi-RBI and four multi-hit games and scored at least one run in all five games. The junior started the Racers' weekend series with Northern Illinois by going 3-for-5 with a home run and seven RBI as MSU won 17-4. In a Saturday doubleheader, Gutzler was 2-for-4 with a home run and had six RBIs in a 15-12 victory and was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI in a 12-10 loss. He capped the weekend by going 3-for-4 with three home runs, five runs scored and six RBI. The three home runs (which came in consecutive at-bats in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings) was one shy of the Murray State and OVC single-game record. He was walked and hit-by-pitch in his final two at-bats on Sunday.
Gutzler, who leads the nation with 23 RBIs has recorded a hit in all eight of MSU's games this season and has helped lead a Racers offense that has scored 10 or more runs in five consecutive games.
Gutzler and the rest of the Racers return to action Wednesday when Lindenwood (Ill.) comes to Reagan Field for a 3 p.m. contest.
