Murray State Athletics saw several of its student-athletes visit Murray Elementary the week of March 1-5 to participate in the Read Across America Day and celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, a favorite of children as they learn to read.
The Racers had 31 student-athletes involved in the week-long program and they visited the classrooms of Chuck Blanchard, Kara Brown, Ashley Callis, Kandi Dawson, Thenia Gibson, Amberly Munsey, Shelley Powell, Courtney Vanover, and Stacy Wortham.

"I chose elementary education because it's an occupation that truly makes a difference," MSU Softball player Mallory Young. "I've been reading to children my entire life. Of course I took the opportunity to sign up for this."
"It was real nice to be around the kids," said Jesse Blackburn of the Murray State Football team. "I was honored to be here and it was nice to get back into my childhood again."
"I love reading to them and I love seeing them smile," said Cayla Levins, who is also an elementary education major and plays softball with the Racers. "I had a lot of fun being here and it was a good day."
"I can never turn down an opportunity to be around the kids," said MSU quarterback KD Humphries. "To see them light up when you read to them is fun. Plus I get to be a kid again being around them."
Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration sponsored by the National Education Association and it takes place each year on March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss's birthday. Thousands of schools across the nation took part in the event.
