Murray State senior Preston French fired a career-low 7-under-par 65 and goes into the final round of the Grover Page Classic one shot off the lead at Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tennessee.
French's opening 65 came just two weeks after he shot a 66 (March 1) in Arizona. Coupled with his second round 75, French is one shot off the lead at 140 behind Arkansas State's Andrew Huseman who carded scores of 69-70=139 (-5).
When the final round begins Tuesday, French will try to make it back-to-back titles at the Grover Page Classic after Murray State's Jordan Smith won it a year ago. French's only win as a Racer came in his 2013 freshman season at the MSU Invitational at Miller Memorial.
The Racers were tied with ASU for the lead after the morning round at 282, but faltered in the afternoon with a 299. MSU's 581 had them in a share of fourth place with Tennessee Tech. ASU (566) leads host UT Martin (569) by three shots and third place Southern Illinois (572) by six shots.
Other Murray State competitors included Duncan McCormick who was in 24th place after scores of 72-74=146. Brock Simmons had a spot in 30th place after rounds of 72-75=147 and Jared Gosser had a spot in 35th place with scores of 73-75=148. Gabe Wheeler's scores of 79=75=154 were good for a spot in 49th place.
MSU's Matthew Zakutney is playing the event as an individual and was in 12th place overall with scores of 72-72=144.
Nicholls State (583) was in sixth place, while Samford (593), New Orleans (594), Tennessee State (609) made up the top-10. John A. Logan (610), Union (TN) (611) and Jackson State (623) rounded out the 12-team field. Â
The Jackson Country Club is playing to a par of 72 and 6,776 yards.
The field of 73 players will begin Tuesday's final round with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m
