Racers 6-Under 282 Leads At Nichols Intercollegiate

The Murray State men's golf squad turned in one of their best rounds of the 2015-16 season Sunday when they carded a 6-under-par 282 to grab the first round lead at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee.
Led by Preston French's 5-under-par 67, the Racers bested the Sevierville Golf Club River Course and had a six-shot lead over Oakland and Western Kentucky who each shot an even-par 288. Southern Illinois and Wright State were seven shots off the lead at 289 and Austin Peay was in sixth place at 290.
French continued his recent great play with a first round 67 to grab a share of the lead with Blake Smith of WKU.
Jared Gosser had MSU's second sub-par round with a 3-under 69 which was good for a spot in fourth place among the field of 78 competitors. Brock Simmons had a spot in sixth place after a 2-under-par 70, while Matthew Zakutney was in 44th place after a 76. Duncan McCormick carded a 78 and was in 59th position.
Gabe Wheeler is playing the event for the Racers as an individual and was in 52nd place after a 77.
The rest of the field included Carson-Newman in seventh place at 292, host Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State (296), Samford (298), Tennessee State (305) and Evansville (310).
The River Course will be used for the entire 54 holes. Sunday's round was played at 6,972 yards.
Monday's second round begins with a 10 a.m. Eastern Time start. Tuesday's final round will start at the same time.
MSU's 282 is their second-best score of the 2016-16 season behind a 276 they shot last October at the Links at Novadel in Hopkinsville, Ky. Last week the Racers shot a 282 in the first round in Jackson, Tenn. MSU's 282 was five shots off of the event record 277 turned in a year ago by Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks won the event last year with a record score of 852.
