Racers Shave 11 Shots In Round Two At FAU

The improvement in 24 hours in round two was impressive as the Murray State men's golf team shaved 11 shots off of their round one score at the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational in Lake Worth, Florida at Fountains Country Club.

Murray State's 282 was day and night better than their 293 in round one and it rocketed them from 11th place to sixth in the field of 18 teams. MSU's total of 575, was two shots off fifth place DePaul and four shots from fourth place Florida Gulf Coast. The Racers' second round score was the third-best of the day behind leader Ole Miss who carded a 277 and third place Central Florida who carded a 278. Ole Miss had the lead at 558, six shots clear of UConn at 564.

Through two rounds, the Racers have bested two Ohio Valley Conference teams in the field. Jacksonville State is in 10th place at 577 and Morehead State is 17th at 607.

The Racers' 2-under-par 282 was fueled by four players shooting sub-par rounds.

MSU's leader after 36 holes is Jared Gosser in 17th place after scores of 70-71=141, while Matthew Zakutney was in 28th place after scores of 72-73=145. Preston French, Brock Simmons and Duncan McCormick shared 35th place. French had rounds of 75-71=146, while Simmons posted 76-70=146. McCormick had scores of 76-70=146.

Racer individual Gabe Wheeler was in 28th place with scores of 71-74=145. He's second among the 18 solo players in the field of 108 competitors.

There was a three-way tie for medalist. Braden Thornberry and Noah West each of Ole Miss were tied at 136 with Central Florida's Manuel Elvira, Patrick Flavin of Miami (OH) and Andrew Potter of Florida Gulf Coast.
