Jared Gosser and The Murray State men's golf team experienced a near-miss when each took second place at the Big Blue Invitational hosted by Tennessee State in Nashville.
Gosser fired a final round 69 and the Racers a 285, both 3-under-par, but it wasn't enough to catch Belmont.
The Racers ended the 36-hole event with scores 296-285=581, which was one shot off the winner Bruins who carded scores of 292-288=580.
Gosser had rounds of 73-69=142, which was four shots off medalist Ashton Van Horne of Belmont who had scores of 67-71=138.
The Racers finished ahead of third place Tennessee tech (591) and fourth place Tennessee State (592). West Georgia placed fifth at 594 and Detroit was in sixth place at 598 in the field of 14 teams.
Other MSU scores included a seventh place finish for Brock Simmons on rounds of 71-74=145 and Preston French in 22nd place with rounds of 79-70=149. Duncan McCormick placed 28th after rounds of 78-72=150 and Matthew Zakutney finished 43rd after scores of 74-80=154.
Gabe Wheeler finished ninth among the 19 individuals in the tournament and 56th overall with scores of 76-81=157.
President's Reserve Course at Hermitage Golf Club played to a par-72 this week 7,157 yards.
The TSU event was MSU's final before they tackle the 2016 OVC Championship (April 25-27) at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala. This spring marks the third-straight season and fourth overall time the event has been held on the course.
