4/13/2016 4:08:00 PM | Football
As part of its continuing coverage of Muray State football spring practice, GoRacers.com now puts its focus on the wide receivers and tight ends of the team. The Racer receiving corps averaged 11.5 yards per catch for 23 touchdowns and 3,820 yards during the 2015 season.
Key Losses – The biggest loss for Murray State at receiver will be the trio of Janawski Davis, Jeremy Harness and Paul Rice. The three players all finished the season ranked in the top 100 nationally and in the top 10 in the OVC in total yard, yards per game and receptions per game.
Davis pulled down 686 yards on 56 catches last season for 13.5 yards per game and seven scores. Meanwhile, Harness finished with a team high 912 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, Rice led MSU in touchdowns with seven on 686 yards.
Dominique Rhymes will also leave a void after playing his senior season in Murray. The big-bodied receiver led Murray State in yards per catch at 15.8 with 190 on 12 catches and one touchdown.
Key Returners – The most consistent returner for Murray State will be Jesse Blackburn who had 48 yards on 612 yards last season. He also scored five times with 61.2 yards per game. Mitch Stults, Ethon Felton and Jordon Gandy all featured in all 11 games for the Racers last year, while Drew Rutland also returns after missing the back half of the season due to injury.
Key Newcomers – Murray State will add eight receivers to their staff in the fall, with one, Sterling Taylor, already in spring camp for the Racers. Taylor is a standout transfer from Contra Costa College in California. Taylor recorded over 826 yards on only 63 catches in his two years with the Comets. In 2015, he notched 481 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
