Racers Earn 3 All-OVC -Wheeler All-OVC Newcomer

The Murray State men's golf team placed a trio of seniors on the All-Ohio Valley Conference team and one on the All-OVC Newcomer team at the annual awards dinner after round one was played at the conference championship in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

MSU seniors Preston French, Jared Gosser and Brock Simmons were named to the All-OVC squad and freshman Gabe Wheeler earned a spot on the All-OVC Newcomer squad. The post-season awards were voted on by the league's head coaches.

All three of the MSU picks for the OVC team has played well, especially in the spring portion.

Gosser, from Russell Springs, Ky., entered the OVC Championship third in the league with a 72.3 scoring average. He had two runner-up finishes at the Big Blue Intercollegiate (April 12) where he shot 73-69=142 and the Nichols Invitational (March 22) with scores of 69—67=136.

French, from Lexington, Ky., was sixth in the OVC with a scoring average of 72.6. He carded his career-low round at MSU with a 66 in Arizona (March 1).

Simmons, from Calloway County High School in Murray, was MSU's best finisher at the OVC a year ago with an eighth place finish. This spring his scoring average of 72.4 is fourth in the league.

The freshman from Sikeston, Mo., Gabe Wheeler came into the Racer program in the fall and has been part of the starting lineup several times. In 10 events, he posted a scoring average of 74.7 and had a low round of 69 when the Racers played at the APSU Intercollegiate last fall. Overall, he has seven rounds of par or better in his freshman season.

Three picks for All-OVC is the most for a Murray State team since they had four in 2010, MSU's last OVC team that won the OVC title. In that season, Nick Newcomb, Cameron Carrico, Jared Wolfe and Chris Griffin were named.

Wheeler is the eighth MSU player to be named to the All-OVC Newcomer team since it was started in 2006. Other Racers honored include: Mark Brant (2007), Cameron Carrico and Nick Newcomb (2008), Patrick Newcomb (2010), Hunter York (2011), Preston French (2013) and Matthew Zakutney (2014). French and Zakutney are part of the MSU team currently batting in the OVC event this week.
