Miller Memorial Set To Host Jan Weaver Invitational
4/6/2016 7:39:00 AM | Women's Golf
The Murray State women's golf team hosts the Jan Weaver Invitational Friday and Saturday at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
The spring event for the Racers at their home course serves as a final tune-up before they tackle the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at the end of the month.
The event is named in honor of the late Jan Weaver who was one of the most loyal supporters of Murray State University and Racer Athletics when she passed away in 2009. Her husband Dick Weaver is still very active in all things Murray.
The Racers host 12 visiting teams to this year's event that will be played Friday and Saturday at MSU's home course. After a day for practice, the teams will tackle the Miller Memorial layout with 36 holes of stroke play. The final round will be 18 holes of play Saturday. A shotgun start each day at 8:30 a.m. begins play. Admission is free and fans are invited to come out and watch the action.
Â
The field of 13 teams includes the Akron Zips, Alabama State Hornets, Austin Peay Lady Govs, Belmont Bruins, Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, Morehead State Eagles, Lindenwood Lions, Murray State Racers, Omaha Mavericks, Southern Illinois Salukis, Tennessee State Tigers, Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and Xavier Musketeers

The Racers have won eight of the 13 times their spring home event has been held since 2003 including six of the last eight. Last season Cincinnati took the title, but isn't defending their title this year. The Racers last won the title in 2014.
Valentina Herrera of Cincinnati defeated Tennessee Tech's Whitney Robertson in a playoff to take the 2015 medalist title. Prior to that, Murray State's Delaney Howson was a back-to-back champion in 2012 and 2013.
Moa Folke, is the Racers' top returner from the Weaver Invitational of 2015 with a nine place finish. Folke will be joined in the starting lineup by Sydney Trimble, Jacklyn Van Meter, Abbi Stamper and Anna Moore. The Racers will have three student-athletes in the field as individuals including Sophie Hillier, Nadine Innes and Jane Watts.

About Jan Weaver
Jan Weaver was an avid supporter of Murray State University and the Murray community for many years. Her husband Dick is still very active in civic and university activities.
Â
Jan was a longtime teacher and education administrator. She served her students for more than 40 years at the high school and college level. Her tenure at Murray State in the College of Education (1985-97) included serving as dean of the department.
Â
Along with her husband, Dick, the two have helped Racer Athletics back up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields. They have assisted in many ways, but none tops their 1997 accomplishment. Through the Weaver's support, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center. The Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997.
